What Darvocet Treats
Darvocet is a combination of acetaminophen and propoxyphene that is mainly prescribed for mild to moderate pain. The propoxyphene component of Darvocet works by clinging to opiate receptors in the brain, reducing the sensation or perception of pain. The acetaminophen component reduces or stops the production of prostaglandins that cause pain. It also reduces fever by affecting heat-regulation sensors in the brain. Propoxyphene and acetaminophen achieve greater pain relief when combined than when taken separately.
Prescriptions of Darvocet
Darvocet comes in tablet form, and generally one to two tablets are prescribed to be taken orally once every four hours. It is a painkiller similar to Vicodin but not as strong. Darvocet should be limited to six pills per day. It is important to take Darvocet only as directed, because dependence or addiction could result from improper use. The generic version of Darvocet is a pink tablet, and brand name Darvocet is a dark orange tablet. Brand name Darvocet is less common because not as many insurance policies will cover the high cost. However, generic and brand name Darvocet should achieve the same pain-relieving results.
Side Effects of Darvocet
The most frequent side effects of taking Darvocet include:
- Lightheadedness
- Dizziness
- Sedation
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Darvocet Dependence
Abusing Darvocet can result in drug dependence. Dependence is unlikely when Darvocet is taken for a short period of time and according to a doctor’s instructions; however, because Darvocet alters the way the body perceives pain, a person may believe that they “need” Darvocet in order to feel normal. This can lead to abuse of the drug and even addiction.
